Snow Day Safety Tips: Ensuring Senior Well-Being During Winter Weather
|
|
|
If you live in Central New York, you know that winter weather often brings disruptions to daily routines for students, parents, educators, and commuters alike.
For our team at Aging Advocates, it means that we are checking on our seniors!
We know that when the weather is bad, it means that there could be risk of….
-
Power outages
-
Higher risk of falling due to slippery entryways or navigating in low light during power outages
-
Improper use of generators or heating sources like space heaters or fireplaces
-
Seniors may drink less water in cold weather, increasing the risk of dehydration.
-
Reduced mobility and hazardous conditions can lead to isolation.
-
Difficulty obtaining medications or groceries if travel is unsafe or pharmacies are closed.
We help in moments of crisis and distress, but we always want to plan ahead!
So, what can you do for your friends, family, and loved ones?
-
Create an emergency kit with supplies like batteries, a first-aid kit, and a weather radio.
-
Develop a plan for evacuation or staying with family if the home becomes unsafe.
-
Keep a list of emergency numbers accessible, including utility companies and local emergency services.
By proactively addressing these risks, seniors and their families can stay safer during winter storms.
